Merci beaucoup. :D

@ Matthiew

TNT is the French for DTT (Digital Terestrial TV), and British “TNT” is of course available in the UK, I suppose the question is whether the DTT from France can be received in the UK?

I would answer that it is worth a trial but it depends where: for example transmitters in Brittany are active but further North ,Picardy or Flanders have no transmitter yet because of having to agree channels with Belgium, Holland and the UK.

Is the receiving antenna right on the coast or better still on a high cliff? Then chances may be greater, inland is the signal rapidly decreasing >5 miles.

French Transmitters are no way near as powerfull as their UK counterparts, also standard used is 8k, (UK is 2k) nowadays all DTT set top boxes receive both but if you have an old OnTV box you might have to change.

Last but not least, in fact most importantly, there might be a need for a mighty UHF aerial combined with a low noise booster, both of which are not that common in the UK, since reception of local channels is usually very good.

But again it is worth a trial, let us know how you get on

Thank you for your reply, Roofeye. And thank you for writing it in English - that's been a great help for me. I see you live in Germany, though, so I'm very impressed that you're multi-linguistic.

I don't live right by the seaside, I actually live a little further away, so the signal would not be as good as it it would if I lived on a cliff. But still, I will try.

This may turn out to be very expensive (especially if I need the booster), and I only really want it for my own benefit, so I become better at French. However, like I said, I will give it a try, but could you perhaps tell me where I'm able to find cheaper set top boxes - this site seems very expensive. Is it necessary for me to buy a more expensive one, as it would be better quality, or are they all similar in quality?

Thank you in advance.
Matthew

Hello Matthew, welcome on forum .
What you need is not an expensive top box but a big
UHF antenna and a good low noise pre-amplifier

My experience with receivers is to stick to main brands like Philips or Grundig both of which have proved superior in sensitivity and selectivity than cheap receivers, those 2 qualities are really required in this case.

I have managed to buy them on Ebay Germany for less than 40 Euro (including P&P) that’s a little less than £30. I’ve had a look on Ebay.co.uk and there seems to be some Philips at reasonable price.

Like this one:

The problem I have found with the Philips is the Software that does not allow channel placement by the user, as a result French Channels would find their way at the very end numbers like 800, 801 etc…

An example of aerial + suitable booster can be found here

If you tell us where you are located it would give an idea of any chance of picking up a French digital TV transmitter, another good clue is whether some FM transmitters from France can be picked up in your area (especially on a car radio)

Hi Matthew
I too am very impressed by the multi-linguistic abilities of Roofeye .
If your goal in receiving the french TNT is improving yours I would suggest
to go satellite.
From what I read in the english speaking newsgroups cheap FTA satellites
equipements are available in England ,(LIDL is often quoted).
The main problem is that contrary to the english ones the french satellites
FTA transmissions are scattered on the 5W 13E and 19.2E positions.
Don't be afraid of posting in french on the forum your french is not so bad.

Thanks for your help, Roofeye, Vidéo-33, and Anonymous.

So it seems I need a good antenna (which makes sense, really :D ) to be able to receive the signal well. However, for the benefit of Roofeye, I live in Poole (which is twinned with Cherbourg - such a beautiful place).

I will try buying a set-top box first. Could someone tell me which site would be the best (and hopefully cheapest) to buy from? Then, once I have one, if the signal is bad, I'll try replacing the antenna, or buying a booster.

Thanks you guys (and I'm sorry I haven't used French - this post would have been far too complex for me in French - I'll post in French once I've learnt it from watching TNT!).
